14 Jan Discovery Time off I-20 at Exit 18
Take Exit 18 off Interstate 20 off the beaten path and discover Edgefield County, an area covered in history. Over 4,500 years ago, Native Americans along the Savannah River discovered how to create pottery, using Spanish moss, palmetto fibers and the rich clay deposits around the grounds of the Edgefield. Many pieces of Old Edgefield pottery can be found in the Smithsonian Institute. Another landmark of history can be found at Bettis Academy in Trenton, South Carolina. Rev. Alexander Bettis, a former slave who could read but couldn’t write, established this school in 1882 to provide education for African-Americans in South Carolina. Bettis Academy provided both day and boarding options for its students. Its curriculum emphasized the Bible and religious instruction, literacy, mechanical and agricultural arts, and home economics. Bettis Academy closed in 1950. An annual Earth Day event is held there each April.
