Fall is officially here. South Carolina’s Old 96 District features some of the most accessible, enjoyable beginner friendly trails in our state. It’s time to get back outside, and the trails are calling.. Our trails are the reason why casual hikers turn into avid hikers. If you are looking for a new outdoor adventure, and a way to enjoy the gorgeous Fall weather, the trails of South Carolina’s Old 96 District are the answer.

Ask any experienced hiker for a list of the basics for hiking and here is what you get: shoes, navigation and nutrition. You’ll need comfortable shoes suited for outdoor exploration, though the trails of Old 96 District do not require serious hiking footwear. A light weight, comfortable backpack is ideal for carrying your navigation tools, whether it’s digital or a trusty printed map, and your nutrition for the day. Pack a little more water and snacks than you think you’ll need to ensure you don’t find yourself on a trail dehydrated and starving.

Now it’s time to hit the trail. One question remains: which trail? There are several beginner friendly hiking trails in South Carolina’s Old 96 District perfect for the beginner hiker. Musgrove Mill’s Battlefield site. The 1.3 battlefield trail will allow you to  experience history and the beauty of the outdoors. Perhaps you may enjoy the Laurens County Park nature trail as this well-traveled trail stretches just under a mile and leads to a forested hillside near a pond, perfect for turtle spotting. Laurens County Park  is just right for families with younger children who may not wish to endure a longer or strenuous hiking adventure. As you build your hiking stamina, head for Lick Fork Lake trail in Sumter National Forest. This trail is just under two miles in length. South Carolina’s Old 96 District is known for its hiking and biking trails for all ability levels. These beginner friendly trails could be just the adventure you are seeking for your family on any given weekend.
