SC Festival of Discovery

The South Carolina Festival of Discovery, presented by Carolina Pride Foods, is one of the largest BBQ and blues festivals in the southeast. Started in 2001,  more than 35,000 people attend the Festival each year.

There will be 90 competition BBQ teams. Over 25 national and international blues musicians. One of the South’s largest BBQ and blues festivals is set for Uptown Greenwood, South Carolina July 6-8, 2017. The South Carolina Festival of Discovery is in its 17th year. As in years past, the SC Festival of Discovery is proud to offer no gate or parking fees as well as no cover charges for the Blues Concerts.

The teams expected to compete in this years’ KCBS (Kansas City Barbecue Society) sanctioned event will vie for a prize purse of $25,000, with the Grand Champion taking home more than $3,000.  This year, the SC Festival of Discovery is participating as a competition in the Palmetto BBQ series. The Palmetto BBQ Series are KCBS events in several communities in South Carolina throughout the year. The cash purse for The Palmetto BBQ Series is currently $2,750. The first place winner receives $1,500, second place receives $750 and third place receives $500.

Also, new to the Festival is the Carolina Hash Celebration which will feature several events highlighting the history and heritage of Carolina Hash. A book signing featuring Robert F. Moss, a food and drinks writer from Charleston, will take place from 3:00 p.m.-4:00 p.m. on Friday, July 7. Moss has authored several books on BBQ that chronicle the history as well as a guide to restaurants, recipes, and traditions of barbecue in North and South Carolina. In addition, The Museum will host Stan Woodward, the award- winning filmmaker of “Carolina Hash”, which explores how hash is unique to South Carolina on Friday, July 7 from 4:30p.m.-5:00 p.m. A Hash Panel Discussion, featuring Moss and Woodward, will follow at The Museum from 5:00 p.m.-6:00 p.m. All events are free and open to the public.
